Nearly thirty years on from our conference in Vienna, followed by our training visit to Hungary, the need for a body like Links Europa which can bring progressive socialdemocrats together is just as acute as when the iron curtain had recently lifted. The demise of state planned economies has consigned all left parties to a state of intellectual nervousness – and even the crisis of 2008 did not produce a fillip for the progressive left that we thought probable.
